Erect shrub up to about 90 cm (3 ft) or so. Branches stout, puberulous. Leaves 4-nate, about 4 mm long, spreading-incurved to squarrose-decurved, only the uppermost suberect, narrow-linear, acute, keeled, glabrous. Flowers 4-nate to solitary; peduncles under 2 mm long, glabrous; bracts subbasal, small. Sepals 3 mm long, ovate, shortly acuminate, strongly keeled, scarious, glabrous. Corolla 5-8 mm long, broad-urceolate, the tube inflated or, sometimes, asymmetrically inflated and the mouth then somewhat oblique, throat slightly constricted, glabrous, yellow; lobes short, spreading obtuse, turning brown. Filaments slightly bent below the anther; anthers included, about 1 mm long, lateral, longitudinally semiovate, the posterior margin straight, obtuse, rough with small papillae and minutely ciliate, appendiculate; pore about 2/5 the length of the cell; awns about 1/2 the length of the cell, spreading, setaceous, smooth or minutely ciliate. Ovary turbinate, glabrous: style included; stigma capitate.
