Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Ericaceae > Erica

Characteristics

Erect compact rounded shrublet to 300 mm tall, single-stemmed reseeder. Branches: numerous erect main branches either terminating in an inflorescence or continuing vegetative growth with many spreading flowering secondary and tertiary branchlets 2-15 mm long, densely pubescent with spreading hairs, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 3-nate, adpressed, imbricate or shorter than nodes, 1.5-2.0 x 0.5 mm, oblong-elliptic, adaxially flattened, abaxially very rounded and narrowly sulcate, glabrous, edges acute ciliolate and with occasional sessile glands; petiole adpressed, 0.2 mm long, glabrous, ciliolate. Inflorescence: flowers 3-nate in 1(2) whorls, when 2-whorled then umbel-like, terminal on secondary branchlets, these occasionally clustered towards ends of main branches and pseudospicate; pedicel 0.1-0.5 mm long, glabrous, red; bract partially recaulescent, approximate and adpressed to calyx, 0.8 x 0.3 mm, oblong to lanceolate, apex rounded, adaxially concave, scarious, ciliate, pink; bracteoles 2, like bract. Calyx 4-lobed, 1.0-1.5 mm long, 0.8 mm wide at base, 2.0 mm wide at apex, very broadly funnel-shaped with a rectangular base, glabrous, pink; lobes 1/2 length of calyx, 0.6-1.0 x 1.0-1.5 mm, very broadly orbicular, imbricate, apex often hooded, narrowly sulcate 1/3-2/3 length of lobe, margin entire to crenulate to serrulate to ciliolate, occasionally with small sessile glands towards the apex. Corolla 4-lobed, very broadly funnel-shaped with short narrow base, 1.8-3.0 mm long, 3.0-4.0 mm broad at top and 0.5 mm broad at base, tube becoming hardened in fruiting stage, glabrous, pink; lobes erect, imbricate, 1/3 the corolla, 1.0 x 1.2-1.8 mm, very broadly rounded, apex obtuse, margin entire or erose. Stamens 8, free, manifest, rarely subexserted; filaments filiform, with a sigmoid bend below anther, glabrous; anthers dorsifixed very near base, subquadrate, subbipartite, spurred, brown-red; thecae 0.5 mm long, ellipsoid, adpressed, bent over adaxially, finely aculeate; spurs subbasally attached, up to 0.5 mm long, either filiform or narrowly triangular with a few lateral teeth, aculeate, pointing downwards and outwards; pore 1/3-1/2 length of theca; pollen in monads. Ovary 2-locular, 0.7 x 0.5 mm, ovoid to obovoid, apex obtuse, apically sparsely pubescent, colliculate, with small basal nectaries; ovules 1 per locule, pendulous, placenta apical; style terete, exserted up to 2x the length of corolla, mostly slightly bent at base, delicate; stigma simple truncate to minutely cyathiform. Fruit indehiscent, 1.0 x 0.6 mm, ovoid-ellipsoid, colliculate, brown; pericarp papery to thin and brittle, mesocarp red with many crystals, endocarp very thin with cells hardly visible; seeds ellipsoid, white, testa transparent, cells slightly elongate with undulate to jigsawed anticlinal walls, mostly with many large pits, but some cells with elongate pits and a few with no pits.
