Characteristics

Erect, robust shrub up to 1.2 m (4 ft) or sometimes as much as 3.6 m. Branches subvirgate, pubescent. Leaves 4-nate, 5-14 mm long, erect to subspreading, imbricate, incurved, subulate, acute, sulcate, glabrous or the younger sometimes thinly pilose and ciliate. Flowers 4-nate or umbellate, 5-to 7-flowered; peduncles 3-4 mm long, pubescent; bracts median, 3 mm long, ovate, acute, scarious. Sepals 5 mm long, in opposite pairs, imbricate, somewhat closely enwrapping and almost completely hiding the corolla, obovate or suborbicular, keel-tipped, concave, thick and wrinkled below, scarious, subviscidulous, glabrous, minutely setose-ciliate. Corolla 3.5-4.5 mm long, cyathiform, widened to the mouth or subobconic, dry, glabrous, white but soon turning brown; lobes slightly spreading, ovate, 2-2.5 mm long, or about 3/4-4/5 the length of the corolla tube. Filaments flat, slender, bent; anthers subincluded to manifest, 1-1.6 mm long, lateral, oblong, obtuse, minutely scrabrid, brown, appendiculate; pore about 2/3 the length of the cell; crests suborbicular, incised, less than 1/2 the length of the cell.
