Characteristics

Erect shrub or dwarf shrub, up to 2.5 m high. Leaves 4-(6)-nate, 6-9 mm long, spreading, imbricate, linear, sulcate, minutely scabrid-pubescent. Flowers terminal, (1-)3(4)-nate; pedicels 3-4 mm long, pubescent; bracts median to approximate, foliaceous. Calyx sepals 3 mm long, linear, base ovate scarious-edged, ciliate, acute, keeled. Corolla 14-16 mm long, clavate-tubular, ± constricted at throat, slightly curved, glabrous, dry, bright red; lobes short, ± spreading, obtuse, green-tipped. Filaments tapering upwards, kinked below apex; anthers included, linear, bipartite; appendages long; pore 1/2-3/5 length of theca. Ovary 4-locular, oblong, becoming spherical at maturity and persistent, glabrous; style exserted; stigma capitate. Flowering time Mar.-Sept.
