Characteristics

Erect shrub up to about 45 cm (1 1/2 ft). Branches somewhat flexuous, puberulous. leaves 4-nate, 4-6 mm long, oblong to sometimes linear, spreading or recurved, not very crowded, flat above, keeled, the younger minutely ciliate, glabrous. Flowers terminal, capitate, heads densely 5-to 12-flowered; peduncles 1 mm long, pubescent; bracts approximate, 3 mm long, ovate or obovate, acute, cartilaginous or subscarious, glabrous, white. Sepals 3-4 mm long, like the bracts but obovate-oblong. Corolla 4-5 mm long, tubular or subinflated-tubular, dry, glabrous, white; lobes suberect, oblong, ciliate below, dilated above to a cordate-lanceolate dark brown tip, about 4/5 the length of the tube. Anthers included, 1 mm long, sublateral, narrow-elliptic, acute, minutely hairy, pale brown, muticous; pore 2/3 the length of the cell. Ovary oblong, glabrous or minutely hairy; style exserted, cartilaginous, rigid, fusiform near the apex; stigma simple, reduced to a mere point.
