Characteristics

Much-branched shrub, 0.15-0.45(-1.2 m on summit) high. Branches erect or procumbent, hairy. Leaves 3-nate; olive-green, glossy, overlapping, held erect, close to stem; blade linear, 2-3 mm long, margins of young leaves with coarse, often forked hairs or glabrous, tall specimens with larger leaves 19-33 mm long. Flowers: in nodding heads at tips of branches; pedicels hairy; bracts 3; anthers muticous, included, with minute and bristle-like awns or without; style ± 2 mm; stigma well exserted; ovary glabrous; calyx 1-3 mm long, conspicuous, hairy; corolla funnel-, egg-or cup-shaped, flares out at mouth, glabrous, pink, red, or almost purple; Jul.-Jan.
