Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Ericaceae > Erica

Characteristics

Erect densely branched shrub up to (?)500 mm tall, single-stemmed reseeder(?). Branches: numerous erect main branches mostly continuing vegetative growth, occasionally terminating in an inflorescence, with a few flowering secondary and tertiary branches 1-5 mm long, all pubescent with recurved hairs, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 3-nate, adpressed, imbricate or as long as internodes, 1.3-1.8 x 0.5 mm, oblong to elliptic to ovate, adaxially flattened and puberulous, abaxially rounded and narrowly sulcate and glabrous, apex acute, edges acute and ciliolate; petiole adpressed, 0.2-0.5 mm long, glabrous, ciliolate. Inflorescence: flowers 3-nate in 1 whorl, terminal on secondary and tertiary short branchlets, occasionally on the main branches; pedicel 0.1-0.2 mm long, glabrous; bract fully recaulescent as abaxial lobe of the calyx; bracteoles 2, fully recaulescent as lateral lobes of the calyx. Calyx unequally 4-lobed, with lobes 1.0-1.5 x 1.2 mm, funnel-shaped, slightly ridged opposite the lobes, as long as or just shorter than the corolla, glabrous; lobes, the abaxial slightly longer and broader than others, all triangular, 1/3-1/2 as long as the calyx, apex acute, ciliolate, narrowly sulcate for 1/2 the length of the lobe. Corolla 4-lobed, 0.7 x 0.5 mm, cyathiform-funnelshaped, sparsely puberulous mainly in upper half; lobes 1/3-1/2 as long as the calyx, broadly triangular, apex acute to obtuse, sparsely ciliate. Stamens 4, included to manifest, free; filaments oblong, straight, thin, glabrous; anthers bilobed, cuneate, muticous; thecae erect, adpressed, 0.4-0.5 mm long, narrowly oblong to obovate, glabrous; pore small, ±1/5 as long as the theca; pollen in tetrads. Ovary 1-locular, 0.3 x 0.1 mm, narrowly ellipsoid, apex acute, glabrous, no nectaries; ovule 1 pendulous; style distinct, ±0.3 mm long, terete, glabrous; stigma 0.3 mm broad, broadly funnel-shaped, edges erect eventually curving inwards. Fruit not seen. Flowering time: February on Jonaskop, July on the Swartberg, Caledon.
