Characteristics

Erect shrub up to 45 cm or so (1 1/2 ft). Branches flexuous or subvirgate, glabrous. Leaves 4-nate, about 6 mm long, erect or spreading, crowded below, incurved, linear, acute, sulcate, glabrous. Flowers 4-nate, terminal, subsessile; bracts approximate, 6 mm long, lanceolate-linear or subulate-linear, acute, keeled, scarious. Sepals like the bracts but 3-6 mm long. Corolla about 1.0 cm long, tubular, sometimes slightly inflated below, sometimes at the throat, glabrous, dry, red or rosy; lobes 3 mm long, stellately spreading, subovate, mealy, white or pink, dark centered. Filaments filiform; anthers included, under 1 mm long, lateral, oblong or subovate, pallid, muticous; pore the 1/4-1/3 length of the cell. Ovary elongate, glabrous; style included; stigma minutely capitate.
