Characteristics

Erect shrub up to 30 cm (1 ft) or more, entirely glabrous. Branches virgate below, sometimes spreading near the apex, the younger deeply channelled by decurrent leaf-cushions. Leaves 3-nate, sometimes scattered, 8-12 mm long, erect to spreading, linear, acuminate, incurved, sulcate, somewhat glaucous. Flowers axillary, corolline, verticillate in close ovoid or oblong heads or false spikes; peduncles 3 mm long, slender; bracts median small scarious, pallid. Sepals about 4 mm long, broad-lanceolate, acuminate, concave, keeled towards the apex, scarious, pallid, only slightly imbricate at the base. Corolla 6-8 mm long, tube ovoid, throat contracted, rosy; lobes 3 mm long, stellate-spreading or reflexed, narrow-ovate, acute, somewhat paler than the tube. Filaments filiform; anthers included, 1 mm long, lateral, elliptical broadly rounded at each end, muticous; pore 1/3 the length of the cell. Ovary oblong, glabrous, style just manifest; stigma capitate; seeds with a wide suborbicular membranous margin.
