Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Ericaceae > Erica

Characteristics

Stout, erect, entirely glabrous, 2-3 ft. high; branches rigid, ascending; leaves 3-nate, from suberect to spreading, mostly curved, linear-semiterete, acute or mucronate, sulcate, glaucous, the floral often larger and subpetaloid, 3-6 lin. long; flowers in 4-7-flowered umbels, at length cernuous; pedicels mostly about 4 (rarely 10-12) lin. long; bracts remote, the lowest subbasal, laxly spreading, ovate; sepals spreading, elliptic or subovate, obtusely acute, keel-tipped, about 3 lin. long, or 2/3 the length of the corolla more or less; corolla subglobose-urceolate, with a rather long neck, not much contracted at the throat in the mature state, but becoming more so as the capsule ripens, 4-6 lin. long, of very thick texture and becoming indurated in age, variable in colour, dull red and more or less livid purple about the throat and limb, or pallid with green tips, or entirely green; segments short, spreading, about 1/5-1/4 of the tube in length; filaments broad, rigid, strongly bent below the anther, 1 1/2-2 1/4 lin. long, about as long as the capsule, so that the anther-crests rest upon its apex; anthers oblong-cuneate, acute or subacute, 1-1 1/3 lin. long, crested; pore over 1/2 the length of the cell; crests spreading, broad-ovate or semiorbicular, affixed at the base of the cell and adnate to the upper part of the filament, or partially free at the apex, finely crenulate or incised, from 1/3-2/3 the length of the cells; capsule globular, glabrous.
More
Stout, erect, entirely glabrous shrub up to about 180 cm (6 ft) or so. Branches ascending. Leaves 3-nate, 6-12 mm long, suberect to spreading, mostly incurved, linear-subterete, acute or mucronate, sulcate, glaucous, the floral often larger and subpetaloid. Flowers umbellate, at length cernuous; peduncles mostly 8, rarely up to 24, mm long; bracts median, the lowest subbasal, laxly spreading, ovate, scarious, coloured. Sepals about 6 mm long, or 2/3 of the corolla more or less, elliptic, subovate to orbicular, keel-tipped, scarious, coloured. Corolla 8-12 mm long, subglobose-urceolate with a rather long neck, very thick in texture, variable in colour, dull red and more or less livid-purple about the throat and lobes or pallid with green lobes or entirely green; lobes short, 1/5-1/4 the length of the tube, spreading. Filaments broad, rigid, strongly bent below the anther, 3-5 mm long, about as long as the capsule so that the anther-crests rest upon its apex; anthers included, 2-2.7 mm long, lateral, oblong-cuneate, acute or subacute, appendiculate; pore 1/2 the length of the cell; crests 1/3-2/3 the length of the cell, spreading, broad-ovate or semiorbicular, affixed at the base of the cell and adnate to the upper part of the filament or partially free at the apex, finely crenulate or incised. Ovary globose; style included; stigma small, subsimple.
