Characteristics

Erect strong-growing shrub up to 60 cm (2 ft) or so. Branches ascending, channelled by the prominent decurrent leaf-cushions, pubescent. Leaves 3-nate, 12-14 mm long, spreading or occasionally recurved, linear to lanceolate, acute, deeply sulcate, softly ciliate, becoming naked. Flowers solitary, terminal, sometimes on very short-branchlets and appearing to be axillary, at length cernuous; peduncles 8-10 mm long, puberulous; bracts median to subbasal, about 4 mm long, lanceolate, acute, scarious. Sepals 8-10 mm long, erect, incurved, closely imbricate, cordate at the base and inserted upon the enlarged angular apex of the peduncle, ovate to suborbicular, shortly acute and apiculate, keeled, strongly nerved, rigid, cartilaginous, glabrous, from 3/4-7/8 the length of the corolla. Corolla 10-11 mm long, conical-ovoid to globose-urceolate, 4-angled below, thick in texture, glabrous, white; lobes about 1/2 the length of the tube or less, oblong-obtuse, erect or slightly spreading. Filaments rather broad, bent below the anther; anthers included, 1.5-1.8 mm long, cuneate or ovate-cuneate, subacute, black, appendiculate; pore 1/3 the length of the cell; crests about 1/2 the length of the cell, orbicular, more or less deeply incised, black. Ovary subturbinate on a broad disc, glabrous; style included, 4-angled; stigma subsimple.
