Characteristics

Slender erect shrublet up to 23 cm (9 in) or so, branching from the base. Branches slender, reddish-brown, puberulous with longer, scattered, gland-tipped hairs admixed. Leaves 2-4 mm long, linear, acute, spreading, about as long as the internode, minutely pubescent with sparsely scattered patent, transparent gland-tipped hairs admixed and usually one at the apex. Flowers in subglobose heads; peduncles 1-2.5 mm long, red; bracts median, like the sepals but usually with one broader. Sepals 3 mm long, linear-acuminate, conspicuously pilose with long, transparent, gland-tipped hairs. Corolla about 4 mm long, ovoid, ovoid-urceolate or urceolate, throat constricted, dry, glabrous, white; lobes more or less spreading, obtuse. Filaments flat, kinked above and dilated at the apex; anthers included, about 1 mm long, lateral, oblong-cuneate, broadly obtuse below, appendiculate; pore about 3/4 the length of the cell; awns about as long as the cells, curved, minutely puberulous. Ovary oblong, densely pubescent; style included, probably exserted at maturity; stigma small, capitate.
