Characteristics

Leaves in whorls of 4, patent to ascending, narrowly ovate to ovate, acute, margins reflexed to a greater or lesser extent but not meeting along the mid line on the under side of the leaf, with stout simple hairs, sometimes with a few side branches at the base, 0·5–1·5 mm. long, along the apparent margin of the leaf and on the reflexed part of the upper surface, usually glabrous otherwise but sometimes with short simple hairs among the larger ones, and more rarely over the whole upper surface, 3·5–8·5 mm. long, 1·0–4·0 mm. broad; petioles 0·5–1·0 mm. long, reddish, glabrous or occasionally with 1 or 2 stout hairs.
More
Stamens 8, normally included in the corolla tube but occasionally the anthers semi–exserted; filaments flattened, geniculate, 3·5–5·5 mm. long; anthers c. 0·8 mm. long, with rather large membranous appendages c. 0·6 mm. long with fimbriate margins, appendages usually semi–elliptical but sometimes with a downward projecting arista.
Bract and bracteoles similar, subverticillate, on the upper part of the pedicel, linear, acute, 2–3 mm. long, with stout white hairs with side branches at the base along the margins and at the apex, usually otherwise glabrous but sometimes with short simple hairs also.
Branchlets stout, the finest 0·4–1·0 mm. diameter, without infrafohar ridges, densely pubescent with very short simple hairs, somewhat sparser hairs with side branches to the tip and stout white hairs 0·5–1·5 mm. long with side branches near the base.
Corolla ovoid, pink, occasionally with purple tips or very occasionally white with purple tips, minutely pubescent, 4·0–7·0 mm. long, 3·0–4·0 mm. wide, lobes rounded with fimbriate or ciliate margins, sinuses acute, c. 0·5 mm. deep.
Calyx segments free or slightly united at the base, narrowly triangular or linear with acute tips, 3·0–4·5 mm. long, hairs as on the bracts, usually equalling the corolla but occasionally not much over 1/2 its length.
Ovary globose, ridged, pubescent with short hairs; style 2·5–6·0 mm. long, usually equalling or slightly exceeding the corolla, occasionally projecting by 2–3 mm.; stigma small, capitate.
Pedicels 2–3 mm. long, pubescent with long stout white hairs with side branches at the base and sometimes also shorter hairs with side branches to the tip.
Flowers in clusters of 8–16, occasionally only 4, at the tips of side branchlets.
A much branched shrub 0·2–2·0 m. tall.
