Characteristics

Evergreen shrub or tree, 0.5– 12 m high, densely branched; branches densely leafy, purplish and glabrous to shortly grey-pilose when young, the hairs ± 0.1 mm long.. Leaves in whorls of 3, spreading to porrect, fleshy, flat above, convex beneath, linear or narrowly ellipsoid, 1– 5 mm long, 0.5– 1.3 mm wide, glabrous or margins ciliolate with dendritic hairs to 0.2 mm long, apex acute or subobtuse, sulcate abaxially; petiole pale, 0.3– 1 mm long, with ciliolate margins.. Flowers in fascicles or umbels of 2– 8 at branch ends, nodding (?always); pedicel mauve to pink, 1– 7 mm long, glabrous or puberulous with minute simple or larger dendritic hairs; bract in various positions, sometimes leaf-like and at base of pedicel; bracteoles often opposite near middle of pedicel, narrowly obovate, 1.2– 3 mm long, 0.4– 0.8 mm wide, concave, denticulate or ciliolate, sometimes reduced or missing.. Sepals pink, free almost to base, 4, subequal, submembranaceous, ovate, narrowly ovate to elliptic, 1– 3 mm long, 0.8– 1.2 mm wide, keeled abaxially, margins with dendritic hairs or minutely ciliolate, apex acute or obtuse.. Corolla purple, pink or white with a pink tinge, ovoid or slightly urceolate, 1.7– 5 mm long, 1.6– 3.6 mm in diameter, the mouth 0.7– 2 mm in diameter, shortly 4-lobed, the lobes ± erect, 0.6– 1.3 mm long, 0.8– 0.9 mm wide, rounded, glabrous.. Stamens 7– 8, filaments 1– 3 mm long, anthers 0.9– 1.4 mm long with dorsal basal appendages, the tails 0.2– 0.4 mm long, the apex bifid.. Ovary 1 mm long, 4-locular, puberulous at apex; style 1.3– 4.3 mm long, exserted; stigma capitate (not peltate), 0.3– 0.5 mm across.. Fruit puberulous, ± globose, opening within the corolla and splitting it.
