Erect shrub up to 60 cm (2 ft) or so. Branches subflexuous, channelled by the leaf-cushions, glabrous. Leaves 3-nate, 2-2.2 cm long, spreading, incurved or at length recurved, linear, acute, sulcate, glabrous, the younger softly ciliate. Flowers 3-nate or often solitary, cernuous; peduncles 4-6 mm long, lanate; bracts approximate, ovate, acute, scarious, keeled, velutinous to lanuginous as are the sepals and corolla. Sepals 1.2 cm long, imbricate, erect, ovate, acute, scarious, keel-tipped, ciliate or naked. Corolla 1.4-1.8 cm long, ovoid-inflated at the base, 4-partite nearly to the base, dull red-brown; lobes erect, ovate-acuminate, much tapering to the apex, acute, alternating at the base with short triangular, acute, reflexed teeth, situated in the sinuses, convex on the upper, concave on the lower surface. Filaments much curved, broad below round the ovary, then narrow; anthers included, 2.6-3 mm long, lateral but appearing subterminal owing to the attenuated base, broad-linear, bipartite, appendiculate; pore about 1/2 the length of the cell; awns setiform, free or decumbent for a short distance along the filament then free and spreading, nearly as long as the cells. Ovary subglobose, glabrous; style manifest, a little shorter than the corolla lobes; stigma capitellate.
