Characteristics

Erect woody shrub to 0.9 m tall [sec. Burchell], single-stemmed reseeder(?). Branches: numerous erect main branches terminating in an infloresence with a few flowering shorter secondary branches, all puberulous with spreading or reflexed hairs, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 3-nate, erect imbricate, 2.0 x 0.4 mm, oblong, adaxially flattened, abaxially rounded and narrowly sulcate, apex subacute, edges acute, glabrous, sparsely ciliolate with hairs and minute sessile glands; petiole adpressed, 0.2 mm long, puberulous. Inflorescence: flowers (1-)3-nate in 1 whorl, terminal on main branches and short secondary branchlets 1-5 mm long; pedicel very short, 0.1 mm long, glabrous; bract fully recaulescent as the abaxial sepal; bracteoles 2, fully recaulescent as the lateral sepals. Calyx unequally 4-lobed, 1.2-1.5 x 1.0 mm, narrowly cyathiform, glabrous, green; the larger lobe as long as the corolla, broadly ovate-triangular, apex acute, other 3 lobes as long as the corolla tube and ±2/5 the length of the calyx, all lobes narrowly sulcate for 2/3 their length, ciliolate and with a few minute sessile glands admixed. Corolla 4-lobed, 1.2 x 0.9 mm, obovoid, glabrous, dull white tinged red [pink sec. Burchell?]; lobes erect to incurved, 1/3 as long as the corolla, broadly rounded, obtuse, margins erose. Stamens 8, included; filaments fused in the lower half, 0.4 mm long, oblong, straight, thin, glabrous; anthers subbilobed, laterally adnate, dorsifixed near base, oblong, muticous; thecae 0.6 mm long, elliptic, with a distinct small subacute apical portion, glabrous, strigose apically; pore 1/5-1/4 the length of theca; pollen in tetrads. Ovary 1-locular, 0.7 x 0.4 mm, rhomboid, longitudinally ribbed, glabrous, nectaries absent; ovule 1, pendulous, placenta apical; style ±0.15 mm long, confluent with ovary but with distinct attachment zone, glabrous; stigma manifest, 0.7 mm broad, broadly funnel-shaped, with erect to incurved margins, subpeltate with age, red. Fruit indehiscent, 1.2 x 1.0 mm, rhomboid to ellipsoid, colliculate; pericarp thick and fleshy[?] with endocarp leathery; seed not seen.
