Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Ericaceae > Erica

Characteristics

Erect; branches numerous, ascending, cano-puberulous; leaves erect, or the older spreading, linear to oblong, acute, deeply sulcate or open-backed, mostly glabrous, sometimes hispidulous, 1-2 1/2 lin. long; flowers 3-nate, sometimes umbellately clustered, subcalycine; bracts remote, basal, small; calyx more or less deeply 4-fid, about 3/8 lin. long; segments deltoid or ovate, subacute, keeled or keel-tipped, about equal to the tube or only a little shorter or longer; corolla cyathiform or subobconic, pink, about 1/2 lin. long; segments divergent, somewhat longer than the tube; anthers oblong, obtuse, smooth, about 1/4 lin. long; pore less than 1/2 the length of the cell; style shortly exserted, sometimes dilated at the apex; stigma peltate or cyathiform; ovary glabrous.
More
Erect shrub, 1.8-2.4 m high. Leaves 3-nate, ± spreading, 3-4 x 1.0 mm, linear to oblong, adaxially subflattened, abaxially deeply sulcate to open backed, sparsely pubescent. Flowers clustered at apex of branchlets or axils of upper leaves. Calyx ± 0.8 mm long, halfway united, 4-or 5-lobed; lobes deltoid or ovate, keeled or keel-tipped, ciliate. Corolla slightly longer than wide, cyathiform, united for more than half its length; lobes ± 1.5 mm long, broadly rounded, white or pink. Anthers ± 0.5 mm long, oblong, obtuse, smooth, muticous; pore < 1/2 length of theca. Ovary sparsely pubescent; style shortly exserted; stigma peltate or cyathiform, ± exserted. Flowering time June-Mar.
Leaves in whorls of 3, patent to ascending, very narrowly ovate, obtuse, sulcate below, i.e. margins reflexed and meeting in the mid line at the back of the leaf, 2·0–3·5 mm. long, 0·5–0·8 mm. broad, rather sparsely pubescent with short simple hairs; petioles 0·5–0·6 mm. long, pubescent.
Flowers in clusters of 3–9 at the tips of the side branches that become shorter and more crowded towards the tips of the stems, forming paniculate inflorescences up to 20 cm. long and 8 cm. wide at the base.
Branchlets slender, the finest 0·25–0·3 mm in diameter, without infrafoliar ridges, with a dense pubescence of short simple hairs c. 0·05 mm. long and sparse slightly longer glandular hairs.
Stamens 8, the tips of the anthers about equalling the corolla, filaments narrow, c. 0·8 mm. long, anthers broad, c. 0·5 mm. long, without appendages.
Corolla campanulate to sub–globose, purple, minutely pubescent, 1·5–2·0 mm. long, 1·3–1·7 mm. broad, lobes obtuse, sinuses acute, c. 0·6 mm. deep.
Bract inserted at about 2/3 of the pedicel from the base, appressed to the pedicel, membranous, very narrowly ovate, pubescent, c. 0·8 mm. long.
Bracteoles inserted at about j of the pedicel from the base, appressed to the pedicel, membranous, narrow linear, pubescent, c. 0·5 mm. long.
Calyx minutely pubescent, c. 0·8 mm., segments fused for almost their whole length, tips leaf–like, obtuse.
Ovary globose, glabrous; style exserted, glabrous, c. 1 mm. long; stigma peltate, 0·8–1·0 mm. in diameter.
Pedicels pubescent with short simple hairs, 1·0–1·5 mm. long.
