Characteristics

Erect or diffuse shrub up to about 30 cm (1 ft). Branches numerous, densely hirsute. Leaves 3-nate, 4-8 mm long, linear, slender, erect to wide-spreading, sulcate, glabrous above, more or less hispid below, ciliate; hairs tubercle-based. Flowers axillary, very numerous in long, tapering, spicate inflorescences; peduncles 3-7 mm long, slender, puberulous, reddish; bracts small, remote. Sepals 1-2 mm long, lanceolate, usually somewhat gamosepalous, acute, rigid, keeled, glabrous, ciliate. Corolla 3.5-4.5 mm long, elongate-cyathiform, tetragonous-tubular, narrow-ovoid or ovoid with contracted mouth, glabrous, dry, usually bright red, less often pale rose; lobes 1/8-1/6 the length of the tube, erect to spreading, obtuse. Filaments capillary; anthers exserted, 1 mm long, lateral, more or less oblong, very obtuse or, sometimes, semiovate, tapering to the base and appearing subterminal, minutely scabrid, muticous; pore 1/4-1/3 the length of the cell. Ovary oblong, glabrous; style exserted, slender; stigma subsimple.
