Characteristics

Erect shrub up to 1-2 m (4 ft) or so. Branches spreading, pubescent and hispid. Leaves 3-to 4-nate, sometimes on the same branch, 6-9 mm long, spreading and recurved or suberect, narrow-linear, subacute, puberulous or roughly hispidulous, naked or ciliate with long gland-tipped hairs, margins reflexed, the broader forms often open-backed. Flowers in more or less close few-flowered umbels; peduncles 6 mm long, pubescent; bracts 4-6 mm long, either two approximate and one remote, or all median, oblong or linear, pubescent, gland-ciliate. Sepals 5-6 mm long, lanceolate, acute or acuminate, somewhat scarious below and tapering to a linear, foliaceous point, pubescent, gland-ciliate. Corolla 1-1.3 mm long, ovoid-tubular, glabrous or puberulous, pink or scarlet; lobes short, suberect. Anthers included, 1.5-1.8 mm long, lateral, semiovate, appendiculate; awns free, 1/3 the length of the cell. Ovary turbinate, villous; style included, rarely manifest; stigma capitate.
