Characteristics

Compact shrublet to 200 mm tall, sometimes sparser and erect to 300 mm, single-stemmed reseeder. Branches: a few erect main branches mostly terminating in an inflorescence, occasionally continuing vegetatively, with many secondary short recurving flowering branchlets up to 10 mm long, young branches sparsely pubescent with spreading hairs, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 4-nate, erect to spreading, imbricate or as long as internodes, 2.0-3.0 x 0.6 mm, ovate-oblong to elliptic, adaxially flattened, abaxially rounded and semi-openbacked, apex subacute, edges acute, sparsely hirsute and with a few shortly stalked glands on both surfaces, young leaves edged with sessile glands and apex with a stalked gland; petiole adpressed, 0.3-0.7 mm long, glabrous ciliate. Inflorescence: flowers 4-nate in 1 whorl terminal on main and secondary branches; pedicel 0.3-0.75 mm long, glabrous or pubescent; bract partially recaulescent, approximate to calyx, 1.5 x 0.6-1.0 mm, elliptic-oblong, apex acute, subnarrowly sulcate ±1/3 its length, sparsely pubescent and edged with sessile glands near apex, pinkish red occasionally green; bracteoles 2, approximate, 1.5 x 0.6 mm, oblong to obovate, otherwise like bract. Calyx 4-partite; segments adpressed to corolla, 1.5 x 0.5 mm, ovate-oblong to oblong, laterally not imbricate, apex subacute, 2/3 as long as corolla, sparsely pubescent edged with sessile glands towards apex, greenish to pinkish red. Corolla 3-lobed, 2.0 x 1.5-2.0 mm, cyathiform, sparsely hirsute to subglabrous, colliculate, deep pink-lobes broad, 1/4-1/3 the corolla, apex obtuse, erose occasionally ciliate. Stamens 6, free, included; filaments filiform, straight, glabrous; anthers bipartite, oblong to obovate, basifixed, muticous; thecae erect, 0.75 mm long, elliptic, shortly stalked, minutely scabrid, pale brown; pore 1/3-1/2 length of theca; pollen in monads. Ovary 3-locular, 0.5 x 0.5 mm, broadly ellipsoid to ovoid, glabrous to sparsely pubescent, colliculate, pink, with nectaries around base; ovules 1 per locule, pendulous, placenta apical; style exserted to 2x as long as corolla, filiform, glabrous; stigma capitellate to minutely cyathiform. Fruit indehiscent, 1.3 x 1.3 mm, globose; pericarp very hard, mesocarp thin, endocarp very thick hard and sclerified, yellowish, septa sclerified; seeds ellipsoid, testa thin, yellow-brown, cells slightly elongate with slightly thickened straight to very slightly undulate anticlinal walls, with a few scattered pits.
More
Erect shrub, 0.1-0.3 m high, much-branched. Leaves 4-nate, 1.5-2.0 mm long, patent, linear-oblong, obtuse, sulcate, almost glabrous above, glabrescent below, margins hirsute with simple and gland-tipped, white hairs. Flowers sessile in many, small, terminal clusters, 4-nate, erect or nodding, ± 4 mm in diam. Calyx sepals 4, linear-oblong, bractlike, free to base, closely appressed to corolla and bracts. Corolla 3-lobed to ± middle, 2 mm long and in diam., dull pink, hirsute; lobes obtuse and rounded. Stamens 6; filaments filiform, 1 mm long; thecae separate, 0.6 mm long, basifixed, glabrous, obovate, obtuse, muticous; pore ovate, ± 1/2 length of theca. Ovary globose, 3-carpellate, each carpel with one apically attached ovule; on a dark inconspicuous disc, dark-coloured, ± glabrous; style slender; stigma capitellate, exserted.
