Characteristics

Low dense, compact to spreading shrublets up to 300 mm tall, single-stemmed reseeder. Branches: several main branches each with 4-6 secondary branchlets 3-10 mm long, hirsute with spreading hairs, internodes up to 6 mm long. Leaves 3-nate, erect imbricate to spreading, 1.5 x 0.3 mm, oblong, adaxially slightly flat, abaxially rounded, subacute to obtuse-angular, narrowly sulcate, pubescent, long ciliate; petiole adpressed, 0.6 mm long, puberulous, long ciliate. Inflorescence: flowers 3-nate in 2 or 3 whorls, umbel-like, terminal on ends of main and secondary branches; pedicel 1.3 mm long, hirsute, reddish; bract partially recaulescent, approximate, 1.1 x 0.2 mm, lanceolate, subfoliaceous to bracteose, the outer in an inflorescence long-sulcate the inner not sulcate, green to red, puberulous, long ciliate with pink or white hairs; bracteoles 2, like bract but 1/2 the length, bracteose, esulcate. Calyx 4-lobed but free almost to the base, 2.5 x 3.0 mm, green to reddish; lobes 2.1-2.8 x 1.0 mm, lanceolate, open-sulcate for full length, hirsute, adaxially pubescent and with scattered marginal inwardly pointing shortly stalked glands intermixed. Corolla 4-lobed, about equal the length of the calyx, 2.3-2.8 x 1.0 mm, ovoid with a slightly bulbous base, densely pubescent and hirsute, white becoming Pink-tipped, hairs white or pink; lobes 0.2 mm long, obtuse, erect, glabrous. Stamens 4(5)[6], free, exserted; filaments as long as corolla or slightly longer, oblong-linear, straight but slightly flexed at apex, sparsely, puberulous; anthers oblong, dorsifixed near base, muticous, dark brown; thecae 1.0 x 0.2 mm, oblong, erect, acute, wth aculeate edges; pore just less than 1/2 the length of theca; pollen in monads. Ovary 1(2)-locular, asymmetically ellipsoid, obtuse, glabrous, with distinct basal nectaries; ovule 1, pendulous, placenta apical; style exserted up to 2x the length of the corolla, glabrous; stigma simple truncate. Fruit indehiscent, 1.5 mm long, ellipsoid, acute, slightly stalked; pericarp very thin brown and papery, some crystals present; seeds ellipsoid, testa very thin and smooth, cells elongate with jigsawed anticlinal walls, no pits.
