Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Ericaceae > Erica

Characteristics

Prostrate spreading shrublet with erect branches, 200-300 mm tall, single-stemmed reseeder. Branches: a few main mostly prostrate and spreading, rooting when touching the ground, a few secondary flowering branches 2-20 mm long, puberulous with a few glands intermixed, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 4[3]-nate, erect to semi-spreading, 2.0-4.0 x 0.5-0.8 mm, oblong to ovate, adaxially rounded or slightly flat, abaxially rounded, obtuse or subacute-angular, glabrous to pubescent or sparsely pilose, often with apical tuft of hairs, often with large or small sessile glands laterally; petiole adpressed, 0.5 mm long, glabrous, edged with sparse sessile glands and hairs. Inflorescence: flowers 4-nate in 2 or 3 whorls, umbel-like, terminal on main and secondary branches; pedicel 0.2-0.5 mm long, pubescent; bract partially recaulescent, approximate to calyx, 1.0-1.5 x 0.2-0.5 mm, leaf-like becoming oblong and bracteose, glabrous or pubescent, ciliate and edged with sessile glands, narrowly sulcate like a leaf to subbroadly sulcate in upper 1/3; bracteoles 2 or absent, approximate to calyx, 0.1-0.5 mm long, glabrous or pubescent, bracteose, esulcate. Calyx 4-lobed, 1.5 x 1.2 mm, cyathiform, 8-ridged, ridges opposite and alternating with the lobes, glabrous to puberulous, shortly stalked glands often present basally, with a single row of sessile glands on margins adaxially, green to reddish; lobes 1/2 as long as calyx, deltoid, acute, fully and subbroadly sulcate, the edges rather thickened. Corolla 4-lobed, 2.5-4.0 x 1.0-1.5 mm, narrowly ovoid to tubular-campanulate, quadrangular in lower half, smooth, sometimes slightly sticky, pink; lobes erect to slightly spreading, 0.4 mm long, subacute, entire. Stamens 4, free, exserted; filaments 2.5 mm long, linear, often flexing outwards otherwise straight, broadened just below theca, glabrous; anthers basifixed, elliptic to oblong, reddish brown, muticous or spurred; thecae 1.0 x 0.2 mm, oblong-elliptic, slightly aculeate; spurs when present small and decurrent along broadened apex of filament; pore 1/2-1/3 as long as theca; pollen in monads. Ovary [1]2-4-locular, 0.6 x 0.6 mm, ovoid, obtuse to subacute, smooth, with distinct nectaries around base; ovules 1[2] per locule, pendulous, placenta apical; style 4 mm long, just longer than stamens, glabrous; stigma simple or slightly expanded towards apex. Fruit indehiscent, 2x as long as the ovary, ellipsoid; pericarp very thin and papery, with exocarp slightly thickened, many crystals present; seeds ellipsoid, testa thin, cells elongate with jigsawed anticlinal walls, pits present or absent.
