Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Ericaceae > Erica

Characteristics

Slender wiry erect shrublet to 0.5 m tall, single-stemmed reseeder. Branches: numerous slender erect main branches continuing growth, internodes long up to 7 mm long, with few secondary vegetative or flowering branchlets 1-15 mm long, all puberulous, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 3-nate, not imbricate, erect to subspreading, 2.0-3.5 x 0.4 mm, oblong to narrowly elliptic, adaxially flattened, abaxially rounded and narrowly sulcate, with acute edges, glabrous sometimes apically shortly puberulous, sometimes sparsely ciliolate and with a few small sessile glands interspersed; petiole adpressed, 0.3 mm long, glabrous. Inflorescence: flowers (1-)3-nate in 1 whorl, terminal on very short secondary branchlets 1-2 mm long; pedicel 0.2-0.3 mm long, glabrous; bract totally recaulescent as abaxial lobe of calyx; bracteoles 2, totally recaulescent as lateral lobes of calyx. Calyx 4-lobed, unequal, 0.5 x 0.8 mm, 1/3 the length of corolla, cyathiform to campanulate, glabrous, green; lobes 1/3-1/2 the length of calyx, the abaxial up to 2x larger than others, all broadly deltoid, acute, narrowly sulcate for half their length, edged with fine short stalked glands and/or ciliolate. Corolla 4-lobed, 1.0 x 0.9 mm, cyathiform becoming urceolate with age, glabrous, greenish, semitransparent; lobes erect, broad, subacute, erase. Stamens (4)5 or 6(7), included to manifest, free or fused; filaments free, ligulate straight, glabrous or fused up to 80% their length; anthers laterally adherent, dorsally attached near base, elliptic, muticous; thecae 0.6 mm long, oblong-elliptic, erect, closely adpressed, smooth, apically aculeate; pore 1/3 the length of theca; pollen in tetrads. Ovary 1-locular, 0.4-0.5 x 0.3-0.4 mm, ovoid, apically beaked, glabrous except for a few short apical hairs often arranged in longitudinal bands, no nectaries; ovule 1, pendulous, placenta apical; style distinct, 0.2-0.3 mm long, terete, glabrous; stigma manifest to exserted, broadly obconical with an erect upper edge, glabrous, bright red. Fruit indehiscent, 1.0 x 0.9 mm, globose with a distinct apical beak, smooth, glabrous; pericarp thin, leathery due to mesocarp thickness, endocarp very thin, many crystals present; seed globose, testa thin with lignified cells, strongly adhering to endocarp, cells slightly elongate, with undulate-jigsawed anticlinal walls, with numerous pits.
