Characteristics

1-1 1/2 ft. high, entirely glabrous; branches few, virgate; leaves 3-nate, adpressed, imbricate, or the lower sometimes scarcely longer than the internodes, lanceolate, 1 1/2-2 1/2 lin. long, acute or acuminate, thick, round-backed, sulcate; flowers 3-nate, subsessile, somewhat clustered; bracts 2, approximate, linear-oblanceolate, acute, 2-2 1/2 lin. long; sepals oblanceolate or lanceolate, keel-tipped, sharply acuminate, the margins somewhat involute, 2 1/2-3 lin. long, about as long as the corolla-tube; corolla subtubular, more or less inflated at the base, subtetragonous, 4-5 lin. long; segments ovate, acuminate, about 1/3 the length of the tube; anthers broad-oblong, very obtuse, pallid, smooth, a little over 1/4 lin. long, muticous; pore about 1/2 the length of the cell; stigma capitellate; ovary short-cylindrical, truncate, prominently 8-lobed.
