Characteristics

Erect shrub up to 180 cm (6 ft) or so. Branches spreading, flexuous, rigid, pubescent or pilose. Leaves 4-nate, 3-4 mm long, densely crowded, erect or spreading, linear, oblong or lanceolate, sulcate, pubescent, hispid-ciliate, grey-green. Flowers 4-nate or umbellate; peduncles 8-16 mm long, pubescent and glandular-pilose; bracts approximate to subremote 3-5 mm long, linear or oblong, obtuse, keel-tipped, pubescent, glandular-pilose and ciliate. Sepals 4-6 mm long, similar to the bracts but linear-lanceolate. Corolla1.25-2.34 cm long, tubular-inflated, sometimes asymmetrically so, straight or curved, dry, pubescent, carmine-red to orange-red or pink; lobes slightly spreading, less than 2 mm long. Filaments filiform; anthers manifest, about 2 mm long, lateral, linear, appendiculate; pore small; awns curved-subulate, lacerate on the outer edge, 0.4-0.7 mm long. Ovary ovoid, villous; style exserted; stigma capitellate.
