Characteristics

Erect fastigiate shrub to 1[-1.5] m tall, or low and compact to only 200 mm tall, single-stemmed reseeder. Branches: a few long erect main branches, some with inflorescences, with numerous lateral flowering branchlets 0.5-20.0 mm long, puberulous to pubescent, hairs erect, with or without small stalked glands intermixed, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 3-nate, erect, imbricate, 1.8-4.0 x 0.5-0.6 mm, lanceolate to oblong, adaxially flat, abaxially subacute and narrowly sulcate, margins acute-angular, glabrous to puberulous on both sides, hairs often only scattered towards base and margins, edged with minute sessile glands; petiole adpressed, 0.5 mm long, puberulous. Inflorescence: flowers 3-nate in 1-4 whorls, umbel-like or with lowest whorl separated by a short internode, terminal mainly on reduced lateral branchlets; pedicel very short, 0.1-0.3 mm long, glabrous or puberulous; bract in lowest whorl non-recaulescent leaf-like and as long as leaves becoming partially recaulescent, approximate to calyx, erect, 0.4-0.8 x 0.2 mm, oblong, bracteose, pink, glabrous or puberulous, ciliate sometimes with minute sessile glands intermixed, narrowly sulcate for 1/6-1/3 its length; bracteoles 2, approximate, like the bract but slightly smaller. Calyx 4-lobed 1.2-2.0 x 0.8-1.0 mm, tubular to obconical, obtuse-to subacute-angular opposite the lobes, the deep groove's scarious semi-transparent the rest pink, glabrous to puberulous or only the grooves pilose; lobes 1/3-1/4 as long as calyx, slightly imbricate, deltoid to ovate, acute to subobtuse, narrowly sulcate as long as lobe, edged with sessile glands or ciliate or with apical tuft. Corolla 4-lobed, 3.0-4.0 x 0.5 mm, tubular, narrowed within the calyx, minutely colliculate, glabrous, pink or occasionally white; lobes erect to incurved, 0.2-0.3 mm long, rounded to broadly triangular, sometimes fimbriolate. Stamens 4, free, manifest to exserted; filaments mostly just longer than the corolla, linear, straight or slightly curved, glabrous; anthers basifixed to dorsally attached near the base, bipartite often becoming divergent, linear to V-shaped, spurred, dark brown; thecae 0.1-0.8 x 0.1 mm, narrowly oblong, finely aculeate or smooth with minutely aculeate edges, spurs 0.15 mm long, linear, arising from junction of theca and filament, pendulous; pore 1/4 as long as theca; pollen in monads. Ovary 2-locular, 0.6-0.9 x 0.2-0.3 mm, obovoid to oblong-ellipsoid, obtuse, glabrous below, minutely puberulous apically, with well developed basal nectaries; ovules 1 per locule, pendulous, placenta apical; style exserted, up to 2x as long as corolla, glabrous, stigma simple-truncate to minutely subcyathiform. Fruit indehiscent, 2x as long as ovary, asymmetrically ellipsoid (depending on fertility); pericarp thin and papery, with many crystals; seeds ellipsoid, testa very thin sticking to pericarp, cells elongate with slightly jigsawed anticlinal walls, with no pits, or sometimes with small pits. Flowering time: most months of the year, but mainly February to June.
