Characteristics

Erect dwarf to robust shrub, up to 0.4-0.5 m high. Leaves 4-nate, 5 mm long, squarrose, broadly linear to oblong, obtuse, deeply and sometimes widely sulcate, rarely open-backed, thick and rigid, setose on margins, longer gland-tipped hairs elsewhere. Bracts 2 mm long, median lowest more distant. Flowers terminal, 4-nate, sometimes umbellate; narrow, pubescent, ciliate with gland-tipped hairs. Calyx sepals 3.5-4.0 mm long, narrow-ovate, foliaceous. Corolla ± 8 mm long, ovate-urceolate, dry to sticky, villous, rose-pink to red; lobes 1 mm long, slightly spreading, obtuse. Filaments tapering upwards; anthers included, 1.5 mm long, oblong-cuneate, bipartite, scabridulous, appendiculate; pore ± 1/3 length of theca; appendages 0.3 mm long, subulate, rough. Ovary broadly turbinate, villous; style slightly exserted; stigma capitellate. Flowering time Nov.-Feb.
