Characteristics

Erect, virgate shrub up to 1 m high. Branches fastigiate, leafing only at the ends, glabrous with numerous persistent leaf scars. Leaves 4-nate, crowded, erect-spreading, linear, up to 7 mm long, acute or obtuse, glabrous or occasionally with a few minute bristles. Flowers terminal or 2-nate on short lateral branchlets arranged in groups on plant, pendulous; pedicels arched downwards, glabrous, red, 10-13 mm long; bracteoles 3, median to subapproximate linear, up to 4 mm long, acute, sulcate (grooved in the upper half), glabrous minutely ciliate-edged, green. Sepals 4, opposite the angles of the corolla, linear to linear-subulate, up to 9 mm long, markedly keeled, grooved for 2/3 of their length, acute, glabrous, minutely ciliate-edged, green. Corolla tubular-quadrangulate distinctly square in cross-section, becoming rounded and contracted at the throat, up to 25 mm long and up to 5 mm wide, greenish yellow turning dull yellow; lobes 4, spreading, to recurved, broadly rounded. Stamens 8, included; filaments up to 17 mm long, filiform, glabrous; anthers ovate-oblong, up to 2 mm long and 1 mm wide, glabrous, smooth, markedly prognathous at the base, awned; awns up to 2 mm long, narrow, pale, partially decurrent; pore large 2/3 length of the cell. Ovary turbinate, up to 4 mm long and 3.5 mm wide, obscurely or distinctly stipitate, 4-lobed at the top, glabrous; nectary disc absent; style up to 17 mm long, filiform, glabrous; stigma capitate, manifest.
