Perennial herb, up to 1 m high. Stems simple, stiffly erect. Leaves mostly crowded in a basal rosette; blade elliptic, 200 x 50 mm, apex rounded, base narrowed, petiole-like, margins crenate, crenate-sinuate, sometimes pinnatifid, scabridulous; stem leaves distant, alternate, sessile, blade similar to basal leaves but smaller. Heads disciform, up to 20 mm in diameter, in few-headed corymb. Involucral bracts ± 4-seriate, imbricate, linear. Flowers: outer female florets several-seriate, outer female and central disc florets dull yellow or dirty white; Nov.-Feb. Fruit with cypsela narrowly elliptic, compressed, thinly hairy. Pappus of many, whitish or straw-coloured, barbellate bristles.
