Characteristics

Perennial herb with flowering stems up to 1 m tall but often only half that height, stiffly erect, softly hairy. Radical leaves rosetted, up to 20 x 5 cm, often less than 10 x 1.5 cm, elliptic, tapering to a petiole-like base, scabridulous, margins crenate, crenate-sinuate, sometimes pinnatifid, dull grey-green, stem leaves similar but smaller and diminishing upwards into linear inflorescence bracts. Heads disciform, up to 2 cm across when pressed, in a few-headed corymb. Involucral bracts in c. 4 series, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, purplish with pale scarious margins, pilose. Achenes c. 1.75 mm long, narrowly elliptic, compressed, thinly hairy, margins thickened. Pappus bristles long, silky, whitish, scabridulous.
