Sessile spikelet narrowly elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 3.5–5 mm. long, the callus bearded with rufous (sometimes tawny) hairs up to 1/2 as long as the spikelet; lower glume coriaceous, shining, the nerves obscure, ciliate on the margins; upper glume usually glabrous on the keel..
