Characteristics

Herb 0·35–1·2 m. tall, with 1–few erect unbranched or sparsely branched stems from a usually massive woody rootstock.. Stems leafy, but basal part (up to 40 cm.) sometimes quite bare, covered with short and long pubescence.. Leaflets 3, oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic-oblong, 2·2–10 cm. long, 0·55–1·9 cm. wide, acute and mucronulate at the apex, shortly rounded at the base, softly pubescent and glandular on both surfaces; main venation scarcely to distinctly impressed above and prominent beneath; basal nerves extending a quarter to half of the way along the blade; petiole 3–5 mm. long; rhachis 6–8 mm. long; petiolules 2 mm. long; stipules linear-lanceolate, 1–2 cm. long, 1–1·5 mm. wide, hairy, veined.. Racemes axillary, the flowering part 4–9 cm. long, 2–2·5 cm. wide; peduncle ± 3 cm. long, pubescent; pedicels 1·5 mm. long, deflexed; bracts subpersistent, linear-lanceolate, 7 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, pubescent.. Calyx covered with long and short greyish hairs and glands, 4–8 mm. long; lobes unequal, the lower up to twice as long as the others, narrowly triangular, often falcate, equalling to twice as long as the tube.. Standard yellow inside, yellow-green outside, oblong-obovate, 9–11 mm. long, 5–6 mm. wide, pubescent in central longitudinal area outside, particularly near the claw, also densely covered with pale yellow glands; wings yellow; keel whitish, covered with pale yellow glands.. Immature pods velvety tomentose with short hairs and some longer bristly hairs not exceeding 0·5 mm. on the margins (long hairs absent); mature pods and seeds not seen.
