Characteristics

Annual. Culms 10–45 cm high, decumbent to weakly tufted, unbranched, glabrous; base not distinctly bulbous, glabrous, cataphylls absent; nodes glabrous. Leaves: ligule a ciliate membrane c. 0.2–0.7 mm long; blade 3–11 cm long, 1–4 mm wide. Inflorescences subdigitate or digitate racemes; racemes 2 or 3 per inflorescence with 7–20 spikelet pairs, 1.5–4.5 cm long with golden brown to dark red-brown or copper-coloured hairs; raceme internodes c. 1.8–2.5 mm long, internodes and pedicels the same length or internode sometimes slightly longer, with a dense covering of hairs. Spikelets lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 2.5–3.4 mm long, to 0.6 mm wide; callus c. 0.3 mm long; lower glume shape and size as per spikelet, very narrowly truncate, sometimes with keel margins extending beyond jagged truncate tip to look two-horned, flattened between keels, dark brown to red-brown, with hairs on lower half of back; upper glume lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, as long as lower glume, colour as per lower glume, thinly hairy on back; lower lemma absent; upper lemma, c. 1 mm long (including lobes); awn 18–28 mm long.
