Characteristics

Spiny succulent dwarf shrublet, with several short stems from a tuberous root, and densely tufted branches forming cushions to 30 cm high and 50 cm in diameter.

Branches seldom rebranched, 10 mm in diameter, very obtusely 4-angled; angles with prominent tubercles 3–4 mm high and 10–17 mm apart along the margins.
Cyathia 2.5 × 5 mm, with broadly funnel-shaped involucres; glands 2.25 × 1 mm, oblong, touching; lobes 1.75 × 1 mm, elliptic, denticulate.
Spine shields 4–8 × 2–3 mm, obtriangular; spines to 8 mm long, divergent; prickles 1–2 mm long, 1.5–2 mm above the spines.
Cymes solitary, simple, subsessile; bracts 1.5 × 1.5 mm, subquadrate, denticulate.
Male flowers: bracteoles 1.75 mm long, fan-shaped, fimbriate; stamens 3 mm long.
Female flower: styles 2 mm long, joined at the base, spirally twisted when dry.
Leaves 0.5 × 0.75 mm, deltoid, fleshy, deciduous.
Seeds c. 2 × 1.5 mm, ovoid (only immature seen).
Capsule 3.75 × 4.25 mm, sessile.
