Characteristics

Spine shields joined to form a continuous horny margin 2–5 mm wide; spines spreading, up to 10 mm long, much reduced at the constrictions of the branches; prickles minute, usually hooked; secondary spines usually flanking the flowering eyes shortly above the spine-pairs, straight or hooked, c. 3 mm long, also with further small spines and prickles.

Branches spreading, secondary branches and branchlets mostly erect, conspicuously segmented; segments to 15 × 12 cm, ovate to oblong, 3(4)-winged or-angled from a stout axis; the angles sinuate with tubercles 10–12 mm apart along the margins.
Cymes 1–3 in a horizontal line, lateral cyathia vertically arranged, often 2–3-forked producing crowded cyathia; peduncles and cyme branches stout, 5–6 mm in diameter; bracts semi-circular, c. 3 × 8 mm, usually splitting.
Female flower: perianth c. 6 mm in diameter, ± triangular; styles stout, 3.5–5 mm long, shortly united up to two-thirds, apices spreading-recurved, shortly bifid.
Cyathia c. 4 × 9 mm, with cup-shaped involucres; glands spreading, transversely elliptic, 2.25–3 × 4.5–7 mm, yellow; lobes subquadrate, fimbriate, 2 mm wide.
Capsule obtusely lobed, c. 8 × 14–17.5 mm, shortly exserted, pedicel stout, slightly curved, to 7 mm long.
Seeds subglobose, c. 3.5 mm in diameter, ± smooth, buff tinged pale purplish, minutely blackish spotted.
Male flowers 35–40: fascicular bracts lacerate, fimbriate; bracteoles filiform; stamens to 6.25 mm.
Succulent shrub up to c. 2 m high, densely branched and rebranched.
Leaves c. 1.5 mm long, broadly ovate-acute, caducous.
Main stem much reduced.
