Characteristics

Cyathia 3.5 × 5.5–6 mm, with funnel-shaped involucres, pale yellow tinged purple; glands c. 3 × 1 mm, elliptic, spreading, touching, minutely rugulose, brownish; lobes 2.5 mm wide, transversely elliptic, irregularly denticulate.

Stem occasionally somewhat woody, ± terete, up to 2.25 cm in diameter, stem and branches irregularly constricted with further branches spreading-ascending from the constrictions.
Branches 4-angled, to 12–20 mm wide, dark green with central whitish stripe; angles shallowly winged, sinuate with tubercles 4.5 mm high and 8–17 mm apart along the margins.
Cymes solitary, simple; peduncle c. 1.5 × 2 mm; cyme branches 2.5–3 mm long; bracts c. 1.25 × 1.25 mm, transversely oblong to subquadrate.
Spine shields to 4 × 1.25 mm, obovate, pale brown; spines spreading, to 4.5 mm long; prickles minute.
Spiny succulent shrub-like plant, 0.5–1.8 m high, erect, single stemmed, sparingly branched.
Male flowers 15: fascicular bracts 2.5 mm long, lacerate, fimbriate; stamens c. 4.5 mm long.
Capsule obtusely lobed, 3.5–4 × 5.5 mm, shortly exserted on a pedicel 2.5–3 mm long.
Female flower: styles c. 1.25 mm long, free to the base.
Seed c. 2 mm long, subglobose, ± densely verrucose.
