Characteristics

Sparsely branched succulent shrub erect to 3 m.; branches 4-angled, 1–2 cm. thick, uniformly green; angles straight or shallowly toothed at the base of the plant, with teeth ± 1 cm. apart.. Spine-shields to 4 × 2.5 mm. above the spines, decurrent to just above the flowering eye below on young growth, soon forming a continuous horny margin; spines to 8 mm. long below, obsolete on upper branches; prickles vestigial.. Leaves deltoid, ± 2 × 1.5 mm.. Cymes solitary, 1-forked, with cyme-branches ± 2 mm. long; bracts deltoid, ± 1.2 × 1.5 mm.. Cyathia ± 3 × 6 mm., with cup-shaped involucres, all parts yellow; glands transversely oblong, ± 1.5 × 3 mm. contiguous, yellow; lobes subcircular, ± 1.5 mm. in diameter.. Male flowers: bracteoles fan-shaped, fimbriate; stamens 4 mm. long.. Female flower: styles not seen.. Capsule exserted on a reflexed pedicel to 4 mm. long, obtusely 3-lobed, ± 2.5 × 4 mm., red flushed.. Seeds subglobose, 1.5 mm. in diameter, grey, shallowly tuberculate.
