Characteristics

Unisexual or bisexual spineless, glabrous, dwarf, few-branched succulent, 40-200 mm high, stem 25-70 mm thick, covered densely with brown tubercles 2-5 mm long. Leaves 50-230 x 10-20 mm, linear-oblanceolate to slightly spathulate. Cyathia solitary in axils of tubercles, on angled peduncle 5-50 mm long, closely surrounded by cup of 2 prominent yellow-green bracts 7-12 x 9-22 mm, bisexual or male, 6-8 mm in diam.; glands 5, fan-shaped, inner margins curved outwards, outer entire to finely crenulate. Flowering time Oct.-Feb. Capsule 8-9 mm in diam., obtusely 3-angled, glabrous, exserted for 3-4 mm.

Like E. clandestina but stem 5-15 cm and partly subterranean, brown. Leaves lanceolate-spathulate, 5-10 x 1-2 cm. Cyathia on peduncles 1-5 cm long.
