Characteristics

Tree to ± 6.5 m. high, with ± drooping branches sparsely rebranched to form a loose untidy crown; branches fleshy, shortly 3(–5)-angled, or narrowly winged, 1–2.5 cm. wide; angles shallowly toothed, with teeth 1–4 cm. apart.. Spine-shields obtusely triangular, to ± 4 × 3 mm., eventually extended to enclose the flowering eye just above; spines to 3 mm. long; prickles vestigial.. Leaves persistent at the branch apices, obovate, to 9 × 5 cm., tapering to a petiole to 7 mm. long, margin entire, midrib prominent beneath.. Cymes solitary, 2-forked, with peduncle ± 2 mm. long and cyme-branches 5–7 mm. long; bracts deltoid, ± 3 × 3 mm.. Cyathia ± 2.5 × 6.5 mm., with cup-shaped involucres; glands transversely elliptic, ± 1.5 × 3 mm., almost touching, yellow; lobes subcircular, ± 1.5 × 1.5 mm.. Male flowers: bracteoles spathulate, laciniate; stamens 4 mm. long.. Female flower: perianth distinct, with 3 or more irregular lobes 0.5–1.5 mm. long; styles 2.5 mm. long, joined at the base, apices rugose, bifid.. Capsule exserted on a stout pedicel to 8 mm. long, acutely 3-lobed, ± 9 × 14 mm., reddening.. Seeds subglobose, 3.8 mm. in diameter, reddish brown with pale speckles, smooth.
