Characteristics

Bisexual, spineless, glabrous, usually single-stemmed, unbranched shrub, 0.06-1.50 m high, with persistent remains of peduncles, stem 25-60 mm thick, clavate, covered densely with grey-green tubercles 2-5 mm long. Leaves 20-130 x 3-6 mm, linear to linear-oblanceolate. Cyathia solitary in axils of tubercles on peduncle 70-180 mm long, closely surrounded by broadly bowl-like whorl of 3-5 larger bracts 6-10 x 6-12 mm, bisexual, 6-9 mm in diam.; glands 5, entire, dark green. Flowering time Aug.-Oct. Capsule 7-10 mm in diam., ± spherical, glabrous, sessile.

Leaves 20-110 x 2-4 mm, linear. Cyathia solitary in axils of tubercles, on peduncle 15-70 mm long, closely surrounded by plate-like whorl of 3-5 larger grey-green bracts 6-12 x 8-16 mm, bisexual, 6-7 mm in diam.; glands 5, entire, slightly puberulous. Flowering time Mar.-June. Capsule 7-8 mm in diam., ± spherical, finely pubescent, sessile.
Like E. clandestina but sometimes branching below, tubercles often rounded, leaves 20-150 x 3-6 mm, cyathia solitary on peduncles 15-60 mm long, peduncle with several bracts, 3-5 forming a cup subtending cyathium, glands entire, green.
