Characteristics

Branches 1–1.5 m long, 3–5-angled, constricted into slender ± parallel-sided segments 5–20 × 2.5–5 cm; angles prominent, 5 mm thick, shallowly sinuate, with tubercles 1–2 cm apart along the margins.

Cymes 1–3 in a horizontal line 2–5 mm above the spines, simple, with lateral cyathia vertically arranged; peduncles to 2 mm long, cyme branches to 3 mm long; bracts subquadrate, scale-like.
Cyathia 4.5 × 6.5 mm with cup-shaped involucres; glands transversely oblong, 2–2.5 mm wide, greenish-yellow; lobes 1.5 × 1.5 mm, rounded, deeply toothed.
Spine shields separate when young, later joined to form a horny margin 2–3 mm wide on the angles, blackish; spines 0.5–12 mm long.
Female flower: perianth triangular, 3 mm in diameter; styles 1.5–3 mm long, joined to halfway, apices bifid.
Trunk simple or with 1–several main branches, each with a crown of curved ascending branches.
Capsule deeply lobed, 5 × 8 mm, exserted on a recurved pedicel 5–8 mm long.
Male flowers: bracteoles 3 mm long, laciniate; stamens 4–5 mm long.
Seeds c. 2.5 × 2.25 mm, ovoid, brown, smooth.
Succulent spiny tree to 4.5–8(9.5) m tall.
