Characteristics

Annual much-branched somewhat fleshy herb to 50(–100) cm. high, stem often woody below; branches and upper part of the stem longitudinally ridged to distinctly winged, the whole plant covered in long spreading white hairs.. Leaves reflexed, linear-lanceolate to ovate, 3–14 × 0.5–6 cm., base tapering into a 2-winged petiole, apex acute, margin subentire to markedly serrate, with gland-tipped often red-tinged teeth, midrib winged on the lower surface; petiole to 5 cm. long; glandular stipules dark red.. Cymes axillary and in terminal 3-branched umbels forking many times, with primary rays to 12 cm. long; bracts narrower than the leaves, with petioles to 5 mm. long.. Cyathia subsessile, 2.5 × 3.5 mm., with cup-shaped involucres; glands 4, transversely elliptic, 0.8 × 1.5 mm., yellow, turning brown, then red; lobes quadrangular, 1.75 mm. wide, margin ciliate.. Male flowers: bracteoles deeply laciniate, apices ciliate; staments 3 mm. long.. Female flower: ovary densely pilose; styles 2–2.5 mm. long, puberulous, joined to almost halfway, erect with apices spreading, thickened.. Capsule exserted on a slightly curved pilose pedicel to 3 mm. long, subglobose, 6.5–7 mm. in diameter, with truncate base and shallow longitudinal grooves along the sutures, pilose with long spreading hairs.. Seeds ovoid or conical, 4-angled, ± 4.5 × 2.5 mm., apex rounded or acute, brown to grey or reddish black, surface obscurely or distinctly tuberculate in irregular horizontal lines.
