Characteristics

Dwarf, glabrous succulent, 50-150 mm high, with truncate stem 20-60 mm thick, projecting from ground, with many ascending-spreading cylindrical branches 5-50 x 4-8 mm on sides often with persistent whitish dried-out peduncles, brownish green. Leaf-rudiments 0.5-3.0 x 0.5-1.0 mm, ovate to lanceolate. Cyathia on slender, rigid, persistent peduncle 4-15 mm long, 4-7 mm in diam.; glands 5, dark green, with 3-6 stubby yellowish to dark green teeth on outer margin. Flowering time Oct.-Mar. Capsule 6-7 mm in diam., glabrous.

Monoecious, dwarf, mostly subterranean succulent with ascending or spreading branches from a stem 7-9 cm diam.; branches 10-15 mm diam., with conical tubercles. Leaves 2 mm, ovate, soon deciduous. Cyathia solitary, 7-8 mm diam., glands crenulate, pale green.
Like E. caput-medusae but main stem up to 100 mm thick and tall, branches 20-40 mm long, often with persistent peduncles, up to 15 mm long, cyathial glands dark green to brown, with 3-6 short teeth on outer margin.
