Characteristics

Perennial herb with a vertical woody rootstock 12 × 1.3 cm., producing annual sparsely branching, very sparsely pilose stems, erect to 20 cm. high.. Leaves sessile, fleshy, linear-lanceolate to 5.5 × 7 cm., base cuneate, apex acute, margin entire, pilose along the margins and the midrib on the lower surface; stipules glandular, reddish.. Cymes axillary and terminal, solitary on very sparsely pilose peduncles to 10 cm. long, forking 2–3 times; bracts similar to the leaves.. Cyathia on pilose peduncles to 8 cm. long, ± 5 × 5 mm., with cup-shaped involucres; glands 5, ± 2 × 2.8 mm., deeply bilobed, with the apices of the lobes entire to distinctly crenate; involucral lobes transversely elliptic, ± 1 × 2 mm. margin distinctly toothed, ciliate.. Male flowers: bracteoles few, strap-shaped, feathery; stamens 7 mm. long.. Female flower: ovary glabrous, exserted on a reflexed pedicel 1 cm. long; styles 2.5 mm. long, joined halfway, with spreading minutely bifid thickened apices.. Capsule and seeds not seen.
