Characteristics

Cyathia c. 3 × 4.5 mm, with funnel-shaped involucres; glands 1 × 2–2.5 mm, transversely oblong, pale greenish-yellow with a narrow reddish outer margin; lobes c. 1.5 × 1.5 mm, obovate, deeply fimbriate.

Spine shields 8–10(12) mm long, c. 1.5 mm wide at the apex, narrowing and decurrent below the spines; spines 4–6 mm long, widely spreading, needle-like; prickles c. 2 mm long, widely spreading.
Branches widely spreading, 5–7.5 mm in diameter, 4-angled, becoming subcylindric; angles sinuate to ± straight, with tubercles 10–20 mm apart along the margins.
Cymes solitary, simple; peduncles to 2 mm long; cyme branches to 4 mm long; bracts 1.25–2 × 1–1.25 mm, broadly ovate to oblong.
Male flowers 10: bracteoles c. 2.5 mm long, spathulate, laciniate; stamens 5.5 mm long, far exserted, anther locules reddish.
Female flower: styles c. 3.5 mm long, spreading, free almost to the base, pale pink, apices minutely bifid.
Capsule c. 3.5 × 5 mm, obtusely lobed, scarcely exserted on a fleshy pedicel 1.5 mm long.
Seeds c. 2 × 1.5 mm, ± ovoid, pale buff with dense, small, pale warts.
Spiny succulent much branched shrub to c. 50 cm high.
