Characteristics

Cyathia on peduncles to 8 mm long, 5 × 9 mm, with cup-shaped involucres; glands 5, spreading, 1.5 × 2.5–3 mm, transversely elliptic, outer margin crenulate; lobes 1.5 × 3–4 mm, transversely rectangular, margin shortly toothed and minutely ciliolate.

Leaves sessile; stipules minute, subulate, quickly deciduous; lamina subcoriaceous, to 9 × 2 cm, oblanceolate, obtuse at the apex, cuneate at the base, entire, much smaller and often scale-like on the flowering stems.
Glabrous perennial herb with annual stems from a fleshy rootstock; rootstock to c. 6 × 4 cm, subglobose or ovoid; stems subfleshy, leaf-bearing or flowering, to 15 cm high, flowering separately from the leaves.
Female flower: styles 2.5 mm long, joined at the base, with widely spreading shortly bifid thickened apices.
Seeds 4.5 mm in diameter, globose; surface reticulately wrinkled with prominent ridges, dark brown.
Cymes in terminal 2–3-branched umbels with primary rays to 3 cm long, each forking up to 4 times.
Male flowers many: bracteoles laciniate with feathery apices; stamens 5.5 mm long.
Bracts to 2 × 1.5 cm, deltoid, apex obtuse-apiculate, base subcordate.
Capsule 8 × 10 mm, deeply 3-lobed; pedicel 3 mm long.
