Characteristics

Perennial herb, with numerous annual stems from a woody rootstock; rootstock vertical c. 13 mm thick, cylindrical; stems clustered, slender, erect to c. 1 m high, woody at the base, glabrous below, shortly pubescent at the apex and around the leaf bases.

Cyathia subsessile, c. 4 × 4 mm, with barrel-shaped involucres, pubescent; glands 5, erect, 2 mm wide, 2-lipped, the inner lip triangular, pubescent, the outer lip subquadrate, 2 mm long with upper margin recurved, crimson; lobes rounded, pubescent.
Leaves sessile; stipules glandular, purple, in dense clusters of minute knobs; lamina to 50 × 1.5 mm, linear, mucronate at the apex, cuneate at the base, revolute at the margin, very sparsely puberulous, more densely so at the base.
Seeds 4.3 × 3.5 mm, ovoid, surface densely covered with tiny warts, especially prominent towards the apex, black at the base, yellowish at the apex.
Female flower: ovary puberulous; styles 2.5 mm long, pubescent at the base, joined for 2 mm, with spreading bifid apices.
Capsule just exserted, not seen entire but probably c. 5 × 5 mm, thinly pubescent; pedicel pubescent, 4.5 mm long.
Bracts sessile, to 4 × 2 mm, spathulate with emarginate and mucronate apices, puberulous, pink.
Cymes terminal, consisting of a central cyathium and 1–3 lateral cyathia, with rays 3 mm long.
Male flowers: bracteoles fan-shaped, deeply laciniate, feathery; stamens 5 mm long.
