Characteristics

Glabrous succulent, 100-300 mm high, with truncate stem 50-200 mm thick projecting from ground up to 300 mm, with many spreading, cylindrical branches 20-250 x 10-25 mm on sides mostly without persistent dried-out peduncles, grey-green. Leaf-rudiments 1 x 1 mm, deltate. Cyathia on deciduous peduncle 2-8 mm long, 3.5-6.0 mm in diam., very woolly within from densely hairy bracteoles; glands 5 or 6, dark green to purple or brown ± reniform-elliptical, entire. Flowering time Sept.-Nov. Capsule 5-7 mm in diam., glabrous.

Like E. caput-medusae but branches shorter, nearly cylindrical, 4-17 mm diam., slightly tuberculate. Leaves 1 mm. Cyathia smaller, 4.5-5.0 mm diam., glands entire to finely notched very small and embedded in woolly pubescence, red to purple.
