Characteristics

Monoecious, single-stemmed, spineless, glabrous succulent, up to 300 mm tall, stem 30-75 mm thick, cylindrical, covered with spirally arranged, conical tubercles, up to 12 mm long. Leaves soon deciduous, linear-lanceolate, 10-25 x 1-4 mm. Cyathia many around apex of stem, several on each persistent and later woody peduncle up to 50 mm long in axil of tubercle, 6-7 mm diam., with 4 or 5, almost smooth, green glands. Capsule exserted on initially decurved pedicel, ± 7 mm diam., glabrous.
