Characteristics

Dioecious, much-branched, spiny, glabrous succulent, 0.2-1 m tall, branches cylindrical, 20-40 mm diam., with obscure tubercles arranged in 9-12 angles, covered with stout, thorny, simple peduncles and short-shoots, 10-30 mm long. Leaves soon deciduous, 2-3 mm long. Cyathia many around apex of each branch, each on a short persistent peduncle in axil of tubercle, 3-5 mm diam., with 5 entire green glands. Capsule sessile, 5-6 mm diam., glabrous.

Glabrous, loosely to densely clump-or mound-forming succulent, 70-300 mm high and 0.2-1.0 m wide, branches 20-45 mm thick, clavate, 9-16-angled, dull dark green becoming grey with age, with sharp spines 8-50 mm long. Leaf-rudiments 2-3 x ± 1 mm, lanceolate-oblong. Cyathia on glabrous peduncle 2-6 mm long, 2-4 mm in diam.; glands 5, dark to bright green, entire. Flowering time May-Aug. Capsule 5-6 mm in diam., ± spherical, glabrous.
Like E. heptagona but plant smaller, to 30 cm, branches 40-60 mm diam., 9-16-angled, thorns shorter, 8-20 mm long, irregularly scattered and spreading, leaves 2-3 mm long.
