Characteristics

Bisexual, dwarf, glabrous, densely mound-forming succulent, 50-300 mm in diam., branches 5-30 mm thick, tightly packed, spherical to clavate, green to yellow-green. Leaf-rudiments soon deciduous, 2-5 x 1-2 mm, lanceolate, sessile. Cyathia initially solitary, terminating branches on fleshy, later wiry peduncle 2-160 mm long, later others arising in succession from axils of upper bracts, 10-20 mm in diam.; glands 5, outer margins with 2-5 processes. Flowering time Oct.-Apr. Capsule 6-7 mm in diam., glabrous.
